“'Tis the season to be spooky.”

As a child I loved Halloween. For most of my friends and I it was a season of fun.

I know many people disapprove of Halloween. Some see it as demonic or pagan. So I often tell children, “If your parents allow Trick or Treat, just remember, it is only a game. You are not monsters, superheroes or whatever.”

Part of the tradition of “Trick Or Treat” began with people putting out little treats to placate evil spirits so they would do them no harm. Another tradition, the Jack O'Lantern, was an attempt to scare away evil spirits. And there are other traditions with similar intentions; protection from [evil spirits]...

Centuries ago people very much believed [in] demons and harmful spirits, or perhaps powers seeking justice or revenge. People felt the need for protection. Aside from prayers and offerings to their gods, people might carry charms. All intended to protect them from supernatural threats.

Although there are cases of “Demonic Possession” that may be more than..

...mental illness, most of the demons in this world are the ones in our hearts and minds. For some reason evil can be very attractive, very alluring, and it is easy to forget our morals for a moment and find ourselves sucked into doing something harmful.

But Christians have had a protector from evil for 2000 years. For much of his ministry Jesus healed people to deliver them from the things that harmed them and dragged them down. And he spoke at length about sin, the sins we give in to, the sins that clog our lives, and the sin of looking down on our fellow sinners. Jesus came to deliver us from evil, especially the evils in our own hearts.

'Tis the season to be spooky, but it's always the season to say “Yes” to God. Today is always a good day to give our lives to Jesus. With Christ in our hearts evil can be overcome.
